About the “180 days in a year” figure
The figure of 180 days in a year is not an official rule and is not written in Japanese law. It is a figure people often mention, said to be a custom. This site does not know whether, when or how immigration officers consider it. The site counts days only because users have asked to see that number.
Entry is decided by immigration officers
- Visa-exempt status does not guarantee entry. An immigration officer can refuse entry or grant a shorter period of stay than the usual maximum.
- The period you are allowed to stay is the one shown on the landing permission in your passport. If it differs from this site, the date in your passport applies.
- Visa exemptions and their conditions, such as passport type or pre-registration, can change or be suspended without notice. Japan has also announced plans for an online pre-travel authorization (JESTA).
What you can do on a visa-free visit
Visa-free visitors enter as Temporary Visitors. This status is for activities such as tourism, visiting family or friends and business meetings. It does not allow paid work in Japan.
How this site counts
- Entry and exit days both count as days in Japan.
- Each day's count looks at the 365 days ending on that day.
- Results depend entirely on the dates you enter. Incorrect or missing dates give incorrect results.
- If you hold more than one nationality, the per-entry limit depends on the passport you use to enter Japan.
- Country data is based on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list dated 1 September 2025 and may be out of date.
Your data
Your dates are stored only in your browser on your device and are never sent to this site. They can be lost if you clear your browser data, change devices or do not visit for some time. Keep your own record of your travel dates.
